China's President Hu Jintao has congratulated Viktor Yanukovych on being elected the president of Ukraine.
"On behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, and on my own behalf, I express sincere congratulations and good wishes to you on your being elected to the post of Ukrainian president," the Regions Party's press service quoted Hu Jintao as saying on Monday.
The Chinese leader said that he would do everything he could to strengthen relations between Ukraine and China.
"The Chinese side attaches significant importance to the development of broad and friendly relations with Ukraine. I am ready, along with you, to make tireless efforts to strengthen the traditional friendship between the Chinese and Ukrainian peoples, deepen and extend cooperation in various spheres, and bring bilateral relations to a new level," the Chinese president said.
The inauguration of the new Ukrainian president is slated for February 25.
