Ukraine should reform market economy, energy sector to stabilize situation, says Pifer

Ukraine should reform its constitution, market economy and the energy sector in order to tackle the economic crisis in the country, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer (1997-2000), who is a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution, has said in an interview with the Profile magazine.

He said that energy issues are of great importance.

"The most important thing, in my opinion, is the reform of the energy sector. In this case, the issue doesn't concern the problem of one sector, the issue concerns the problem of Ukraine's national security. While the country remains vulnerable in the energy sector, it will be exposed to pressure from Russia," Pifer said.

"If we look at challenges it [Ukraine] faces, this, first and foremost, is the reform of the constitution, the redistribution of some powers between the president and the premier, and between the executive branch and the Verkhovna Rada... Secondly, this concerns market reforms that will help further consolidate the market economy and ensure its further growth," he said.
