Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko and Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Peter Milliken have discussed the possibility of deepening cooperation between the two states in key sectors.
Yuschenko said that the start of talks between Ukraine and Canada that forming a free trade area had become an important step for the development of trade and economic relations between the two countries.
"I think that the time has come to eliminate trade restrictions between us," the presidential press service quoted Yuschenko as saying.
He said that the continuation of the practice of holding business forums was an important element in stepping up cooperation. Yuschenko also said that Ukraine was ready to support a "very packed schedule" for holding such events.
The president also focused on cooperation in the aerospace industry. In this context, Yuschenko said that Ukraine and Canada had recently launched promising economic projects, including the one on the creation of the first Ukrainian communications satellite and the crediting of respective work by Export Development Canada (EDC).
"Ukraine has a great desire to have its own communications satellite in 2011 and render a significant part of Euro 2012 services by means of this project," he said.
Yuschenko described cooperation in the energy sector as promising. He said that great opportunities were opening up for cooperation in the sphere of nuclear energy. In this connection, he said that Ukraine and Canada were discussing the possible use of Canada's CANDU nuclear energy production technology in Ukraine.
Milliken, in turn, said that Canada attached great significance to the development of its cooperation with Ukraine.
"Ukrainian-Canadian relations are very important to us, and my visit today is a good reason for us to think about the future directions of our cooperation," he said.
