Maidan protesters to set up another camp in Kyiv, near Officers House

2 min read

The Pro-EU protest on Kyiv's Independence Square, Maidan Nezalezhnosti, is expanding – peaceful protesters have already occupied the Kyiv quarters where administrative buildings are located, Batkivschyna faction MP Andriy Shevchenko said.

As of now, Instytutska Street and Kyiv's main street Khreschatyk are filled with protesters, Shevchenko said when speaking from the roof of a minibus at the intersection of Hrushevsky Street and Kriposny Lane.

"The administrative center of Kyiv is utterly blocked by peaceful protesters," Shevchenko said. The intersection of Hrushevsky Street and Kriposny Lane is "the southern border of the pro-EU Maidan," he said.

"Another Maidan will be set up at the intersection," where constant rallies will be held and rally participants will be all the time, another Batkivschyna faction MP Andriy Parubiy said. "Neither the government nor [Ukrainian President Viktor] Yanukovych will work until they comply with our demands. We stand until we win," he said.

According to organizers, they plan to set up another camp at the intersection.

As of now, the minibus, from which deputies are speaking, is parked right at the police cordon separating pro-EU protesters from pro-government rally organized by the Party of Regions on Constitution Square near the Verkhovna Rada [parliament] building.

Opposition activists say they urge opponents to gather near the parliament building, to join and not to allow the break-up of the country. People are chanting: "East and West are Together."
