Ukrainian citizen Nazar Tsapok, a former owner of the www.daily.ua Web site, voluntarily provided testimony at the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Friday as part of investigation into a criminal case on the disclosure of state secrets and "slanderous reports by Ukrainian MP Vasleriy Konovaliuk that damaged Ukraine's national security," according to the press center of the SBU.
The press center said investigators decided to invite Tsapok for questioning.
"The need to obtain evidence from Tsapok was stipulated by the requirements of the criminal procedural law in connection with testimony provided by Konovaliuk on this criminal case," the SBU said.
Tsapok said that "he is temporarily jobless, was not and is not a journalist, and the DailyUA Web site was registered by him in September-October 2008," the service said. Tsapok left the SBU building at 1400 and no restrictions were imposed on him, the SBU said.
"The SBU is grateful to Ukrainian citizen Nazar Tsapok for his voluntary assistance in the investigation process, which might significantly aid the investigation into the criminal case on the disclosure of state secrets, and [help] institute criminal proceedings against the guilty," the press center said.
The agency also learned from well-informed sources that the www.daily.ua Web site is owned by MP Serhiy Levochkin. In September-October 2008, he reregistered the Internet resource under the name of the jobless 22-year-old Tsapok. On October 1, a secret document was posted on this Web site. The agency suggested that this might be a "paid fraud by Russia's FSB [Federal Security Service], which Konovaliuk had carried out in Ukraine."
