Tymoshenko's associates trying to mislead public, commenting on ECHR ruling, says MP Oliynyk
The member of the parliamentary faction of the Regions Party, MP Volodymyr Oliynyk believes that the supporters of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko are continuing to make speculative statements, as the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) was made not in their favor.
"The European Court found that Tymoshenko's detention has no political motivation. Moreover, the decision of the European Court of Human Rights has once again confirmed the falsity of statements by Yulia Tymoshenko and her defenders. Specifically, the citizens remember well how in due course the defenders of Tymoshenko started shouting about allegedly beating her. But the European judges ruled that this is absolutely not true. The European judges also emphasized that Tymoshenko was given medical aid much more weighty than that to other prisoners. So this statement by Tymoshenko and her defenders is not true," the press service of the Regions Party said citing Oliynyk.
In connection with this, Oliynyk expressed the view that now the task of the ex-premier's lawyers is to justify what the statement by Tymoshenko's defenders regarding political motivation in the case of Tymoshenko testified about.
"But these lawyers are deceiving - they chose such a way of defense. We speak the language of the law. They speak the client's language, as the client has to be necessarily justified," the MP said.
Oliynyk noted that the text of the ECHR ruling does not contain any word about the alleged political motivation of Tymoshenko's arrest.
"It says that her arrest took place under the old Criminal Procedure Code, which did not comply with the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms," he said.
In addition, the MP said that in November 2012 a new Criminal Procedure Code came into force in Ukraine, which in a different way regulates such a preventive measure as arrest. He added that the ECHR ruling can be regarded as the requirement to amend the legislation, which Ukraine has already completed.
"The new code is fully in line with European standards," said the MP.
As reported, on May 8 the defense counsel of Ukrainian Former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Serhiy Vlasenko, stated that Ukrainian officials are speculating on the issue of the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on the ex-premier's appeal.
