Ukrainian and Polish defense ministers Yuriy Yekhanurov and Bogdan Klich have invited the Baltic states to join the initiative on the formation of a joint peacekeeping brigade.
The Polish Defense Minister told this to Ukrainian reporters after talks in the Visegrad Four Plus Ukraine format at the level of heads of defense agencies in Warsaw on Thursday.
"We have agreed we will talk with other potential partners while forming a joint Ukrainian-Polish-Lithuanian brigade. We will hold talks with the Baltic countries to interest them in joining this brigade," he said.
The Polish defense minister also said that the talks dealt with Ukraine's cooperation with NATO and the European Union, as well as the countries' role in military operations, including Ukrainian servicemen's participation in operations in Afghanistan.
The head of the Polish Defense Ministry said that this peacekeeping brigade should be set up by 2013.
The parties also discussed assistance to Ukraine in its efforts to join NATO, the Polish defense minister said.
Military-technical cooperation between the Visegrad Four and Ukraine was also addressed.
The Visegrad Four is a regional organization in Central Europe, comprised of Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
