Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Valentyn Nalyvaichenko doesn't agree with the statement of Regions Party Viktor Yanukovych that the opening of a criminal case into the genocide in Ukraine in 1932-1933 is a provocation.
"It is very dangerous to call this a provocation or to engage politicians in this process. As for the statements by certain politicians, I would recommend remembering the regions they come from. Donetsk region, for instance, has hundreds of settlements [the population of which was] destroyed by the famine," Nalyvaichenko said in an interview with Radio Liberty on Wednesday night.
The security chief said that opening a probe into this issue is not directed against Russia, or any other state or nation.
"The [recognition of] Ukraine's genocide will protect the Russian Federation as well. It will become clear that there was repression on their territory as well, and the concentration camps were brought to Kazakhstan and Russia. I am sure that the investigatory and law-enforcement agencies of Russia could take up the initiative, support the probe and launch an investigation of their own, to find out who killed millions of people in Russia," the SBU chief said.
