Number of checkpoints on Ukrainian-Polish border should be doubled, says border official

The number of checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Polish border should be at least doubled ahead of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship, First Deputy Head of the Ukrainian State Border Service Pavlo Shysholin has said.

"Of course, our country has reached such a point when the current number of checkpoints, and we have the 244 operating, is not enough. We're currently resolving the problem by putting an extreme burden of work on our personnel and making huge changes in technology," he told Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that the number of people registered by Ukrainian border guards every day was 1.5-2 times higher than these checkpoints were meant to receive.

"At the western section of the Ukrainian border, this figure is three times higher than foreseen by the designed capacity of checkpoints," he added.
