EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs has called on Ukraine to meet the necessary conditions to get funds from international financial institutions to modernize its gas transportation system.
He made the call in his report on whether Europe could finance the security and purity of energy supplies in future, which was made available to an Interfax-Ukraine reporter in Brussels on Wednesday.
The document reads that an international investment conference on modernizing Ukraine's gas transit system held in Brussels on March 23 was an example of how the European Union could catalyze the provision of funds from international financial institutions - the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank and the European Investment Bank - if Ukraine meets all of the necessary conditions.
"On the other hand, it should be remembered that you [the European Union] couldn't invest into unprepared ground," Piebalgs said.
