The first assessment of Kyiv's progress in addressing the issue of selective justice will be made in a month by the European Parliament's monitoring mission lead by ex-president of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski and ex-president of the parliament Pat Cox, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule has said
Speaking at a European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday, Fule highly praised the work of the mission, which is monitoring the trials of Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko.
"This mission needs and has all our support as its importance cannot be overstated. It is key that the mission will be in a position next month to report that there has been clear progress. We have underlined this in every single interaction with the Ukrainian authorities in recent weeks and months," he told the parliament.
He also reiterated the official position of the European Commission concerning the prospect of the signing of the association agreement and its relation to the criminal cases against Tymoshenko and Lutsenko.
"Let me be very clear: if we want to sign the Association Agreement, and I am convinced we do, as it is in our shared interest, the way forward for the authorities is not through bringing more and more disturbing news," he said.
