The Council of Europe says that public prosecution reform should be implemented in Ukraine in order to properly introduce the new Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
"The most important progress of Ukraine is the adoption and introduction of the Criminal procedure Code. Public prosecution reform is considered to be a key factor for the proper introduction of the new Criminal Procedure Code," Head of the Council of Europe's Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law Philippe Boillat said in a statement that was read aloud at a conference on the Council of Europe's project to support criminal justice reform in Ukraine in Kyiv on Tuesday.
Boillat stressed that the Council of Europe thinks that Ukraine's new Criminal Procedure Code is a modern legal document harmonized with European standards.
According to him, the new code forms a competitive system and envisages a range of measures for the protection of citizens from maltreatment by law enforcers.
Still, other necessary reforms have to be implemented for proper introduction of the new Criminal Procedure Code, Boillat said.
