MEP Kowal about Ukraine: 'It's impossible to simultaneously take fruits from two baskets'

MEP Pawel Kowal has said that the Ukrainian authorities should give a clear message about its foreign policy.

"The authorities say that it's possible to simultaneously take [fruits] from several baskets - a little from the basket of the Customs Union and a little from the basket of the EU and so on, and that it's possible to take the best fruits from all of these baskets. But I want to emphasize that that's impossible," he said at a press conference at the Institute of World Policy in Kyiv on Thursday.

He said that a clear pro-European signal was expected from the Ukrainian authorities, since the European Parliament is more often saying that Ukraine is returning "to the old track."

"I think there remain a few months, not a year, to decide on whether the Association Agreement will be signed or not," the MEP said.

In this context, Kowal said that the key fact is whether Ukraine can resolve the problems that were set out in the EU Council conclusions.

"The EU is waiting for clear and decisive action from Ukraine," he said.

The MEP also said that three important events for Ukraine's EU integration would soon take place – the EU-Ukraine summit in February, a meeting of representatives of the European Parliament and Ukrainian deputies in Kyiv in early April and the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November.
