A central storage facility for spent sources of ionizing radiation should be built and commissioned by December 2014, according to Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Andriy Kliuyev.
The NSDC's press service quotes Kliuyev as saying that put into operation by 2015 should also be another nuclear facility – a source of neutrons based on a sub-critical assembly driven by an electron accelerator.
According to Kliuyev, the abovementioned storage facility is being built at the site of the Vektor complex facility designed to handle the decontamination, recycling and disposal of radioactive waste from areas contaminated by the 1986 Chornobyl accident.
The construction and commissioning of these facilities is foreseen in the National Action Plan for 2013-2014 for the implementation of the provisions of the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit Communiqué, which was enabled by presidential decree No.73 dated February 11, 2013.
