Police interrogate famous music producer involved in fatal car accident as witness, says newspaper

The famous Ukrainian composer and music producer, Kostiantyn Meladze, who killed a 30-year-old woman in a car accident on the Kyiv-Obukhiv highway on the night of December 27, is interrogated as a witness of the case, police reported.

"He has been granted witness status. According to the new Criminal Procedure Code, no restriction measure should be used until there is the proof that he is guilty. When an investigator finds the proof, the case will be sent to court to select a measure of restraint for him [Meladze]," the chief of the public liaison office of the Main Department of Ukraine's Interior Ministry in Kyiv region, Mykola Zhukovych, told the Segodnya newspaper.

Police also informed that Meladze had witnessed and had not denied that he was driving the car. He called an ambulance and the police on his own.

Meanwhile, law-enforcers declined some media reports saying that the composer was not alone in the car and a former pop singer of the VIA Gra band, Eva Bushmina, was in the same car.

"He was driving alone, there was nobody else in the car. His documents are fine, he does not deny anything. An alcohol detector showed that the driver was sober, the results of his blood test will be ready soon," Zhukovych said.

As reported, Kostiantyn Meladze was driving the Lexus car which knocked down and killed a 30-year-old woman on the Kyiv-Obukhiv highway near the Piatykhatky bus stop on December 27, 2012.

Criminal proceedings were launched under the second part of Article 286 of the Criminal Code (violation of traffic rules or vehicle operation rules), which envisages up to eight years of imprisonment.
