The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) put into circulation on Aug. 24 a silver commemorative coin, "To the 35th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence," with a face value of UAH 20, the central bank said on Monday.
"When we were looking for an image that would most accurately embody 35 years of Ukraine’s independence, we chose a shield. It has taken blows, but it has not broken — it has held," National Bank Governor Andriy Pyshnyy said while presenting the coin at the Verkhovna Rada.
The coin continues the "Ukrainian State" series and is made of 925 sterling silver, with a fine precious metal weight of 62.2 grams. The minting quality category is "special uncirculated," with the coin finished in patina and localized gilding.
The obverse depicts a soldier’s hand holding a shield, along with a child’s drawing that serves as a talisman for the defender. The inscription "35 YEARS OF FIGHTING FOR THE FUTURE" runs around the edge.
The reverse depicts the outer side of a damaged shield, symbolizing the Ukrainian people’s fight for freedom and independence. The coin’s artist is Andriy Sahach. The mintage is up to 5,000 coins.
The coin will be sold through the NBU’s online numismatic products store and through distributor banks. Information on the start of sales will be published on their official websites.
