European Parliament President Roberta Metsola congratulated the people of Ukraine on Independence Day. In a video address released by the Verkhovna Rada’s press service, she praised the courage of the Ukrainian people.
"For 35 years, you have worked together to forge your own destiny, even as Russia vainly tries to turn back the clock and destroy the state you won through hard struggle. Today is an occasion for celebration, but also for reflecting on how much you have already sacrificed, and continue to sacrifice, for your country’s freedom. Every day, Ukrainians — both on the battlefield and off it — show the world their strength, resilience and extraordinary courage. Your actions teach all of us the true meaning of independence," Metsola said.
She stressed that Ukrainians can count on the European Parliament’s continued support.
"The European Parliament will keep supporting you in your fight for freedom, as we have done from day one. And we will keep standing up for Ukraine’s right to its place in the European Union. With the recent opening of the first negotiating clusters for your country’s accession, we are moving in the right direction. So on this Independence Day of Ukraine, Europe, together with Ukrainians all over the world, looks to the future with hope — a bright European future, where we can once again live in peace," she said.
