Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the government, local authorities, and relevant ministries to develop solutions to reform the system of social support for veterans and their families.
"I ask the Ukrainian government as a whole, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Policy, and journalists, as well as our team, a group of parliamentarians, and community leaders to propose solutions regarding the necessary changes to all aspects of social support for veterans and their families," Zelenskyy said at the Ninth International Veterans Forum on Saturday in Kyiv.
According to him, practical changes are needed in the substance of veterans’ policy, particularly in the opportunities and prospects that the state creates for veterans.
The president said that bureaucratic barriers often prove to be stronger than the support veterans can receive from the state, and the social support system has not yet been structured to address veterans’ problems.
Separately, Zelenskyy drew attention to the work of veteran centers in communities. He said that some of these centers remain underutilized because they have not been equipped with the necessary services and tangible assistance for veterans and their families.
He also called for a review of veterans’ transition paths from military service to civilian life, as well as the system of state and local services, which must be adapted to modern realities.
"There are also many outdated regulations and approaches. The state has the ability and the responsibility to create opportunities for male and female veterans, as well as for the families of our veterans," the president said.
