Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated the need to move effective veteran policy programs from experimental resolutions to a more reliable foundation and to extend support to veterans’ families.
"Many resolutions have been effective; these were resolutions from the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, as well as coordination among various ministries. We need to establish a more reliable framework with a focus on both veterans and their families," Zelenskyy said at the Ninth International Veterans Forum on Saturday in Kyiv.
According to him, in recent years, numerous programs based on pilot initiatives have been implemented as part of veterans’ policy.
As an example, the president cited medical treatment and dental prosthetics programs for veterans, which, in his view, need to be expanded and supplemented with support for other pressing needs of veterans and their families.
Zelenskyy said assistance should extend not only to the veteran himself but also to the family that supports him, awaits his return, and dedicates itself to caring for the veteran.
"So that not only the veteran himself, but also the family that supports him, waits for him, and devotes itself to him, receives all the necessary assistance and is not left alone to face all these challenges," the president said.
He also emphasized the need to create opportunities for veterans and their families to rest and adjust.
"We discussed this with the minister [of veterans’ affairs], and I think he will provide details on this proposal and this program today," Zelenskyy said.
