A Russian An-124 cargo plane, which has been grounded at Toronto Pearson International Airport since February 2022, will remain there in accordance with a ruling by the Federal Court of Canada, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said.
"We have successfully demonstrated that Canada will not serve as a safe haven for assets linked to entities sanctioned for supporting Russia’s illegal, large-scale invasion of Ukraine," Anand said in a statement, shared on the X social media platform.
According to her, those who facilitate the Kremlin’s aggression must be prepared to face the consequences.
"We will enforce our sanctions, demand accountability, and continue to stand firmly with Ukraine," the Canadian foreign minister said.
The aircraft in question is an An-124 registered in Russia and owned by Volga-Dnepr group, which is subject to Canadian sanctions. The aircraft has been at Toronto Pearson International Airport since February 2022.
As previously reported, in October 2025, Anand said Canada intends to transfer the large Russian Antonov An-124 cargo plane to Ukraine once the legal proceedings regarding its official confiscation are completed.
