Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the government, the Verkhovna Rada, and veterans to address the issue of codifying legislation in the field of veterans’ policy and the possibility of creating a veterans’ code.
"I would very much like to ask the Ukrainian government, together with the chairman, our parliamentarians, and the veterans themselves, to draft the relevant legislation. And, perhaps, if there is such a need… it would be worth codifying the legislation," Zelenskyy said at the Ninth International Veterans Forum on Saturday in Kyiv.
According to him, veterans – both men and women – deserve separate legislation and special attention, which should also extend to their families.
"The family of a veteran, the family of our fallen soldier, the family of our soldier, our prisoner of war, our missing-in-action – these families must be full-fledged participants in veterans’ policy," the president said.
He said this approach is not yet fully reflected in government policy or community activities.
"We have 1.5 million veterans; we have more than 1.5 million families; we have the families of veterans. We understand that this truly represents a significant portion of Ukrainian society," he said.
"In that case, I would like to draw attention to this – specifically, the possibility of a potential veterans’ code. Please discuss this among yourselves and be sure to provide me with feedback," the president said.
