The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine supports Lithuania’s initiative to remove works glorifying Russian imperialism from educational curricula and instead include the works of Taras Shevchenko.
"The Prime Minister of Lithuania proposed reviewing national educational curricula and abandoning the use of works by Mikhail Lomonosov. The Ministry of Education, Science and Sports of Lithuania was instructed to work out the relevant changes. The initiative concerns texts glorifying the aggressive wars of the Russian Empire. Instead, it is proposed to include the works of Taras Shevchenko in the educational curriculum," the Ministry reported.
The Ministry of Education of Ukraine welcomes this initiative of the Lithuanian government and considers it an important and timely step toward freeing education from Russian imperial narratives.
"This is especially important in the conditions of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. Russian aggression relies, in particular, on imperial myths that have been spread for decades through education and culture. Therefore, a critical rethinking of educational content is a component of the resilience of democratic societies and counteracting propaganda," the department noted.
It is noted that the Ukrainian side particularly appreciates the proposal to familiarize Lithuanian students with the works of Taras Shevchenko.
