Stefanchuk: Ukraine counts on US House backing bill to step up sanctions pressure on Russia
Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked the U.S. Senate for supporting a bill to increase sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation and hopes the House of Representatives will take a similar decision.
"I am grateful to the United States Senate for its support of the bill to increase sanctions pressure on Russia. This is an important bipartisan signal of determination to counter Russian aggression… We are counting on the support of the U.S. House of Representatives and hope the bill will take effect as soon as possible," Stefanchuk said on Facebook on Friday evening.
He said the Senate’s decision also holds special significance as a tribute to Senator Lindsey Graham, the bill’s author, who worked consistently and tirelessly to advance it.
"Today, this initiative becomes part of his political legacy and a continuation of the cause to which he was dedicated," the Ukrainian Parliament’s chairman said.
According to Stefanchuk, strong and consistent sanctions are one of the key tools for compelling Russia to end the war and establish a just peace.
As previously reported, on August 7, the U.S. Senate voted by a majority to support a sweeping sanctions bill against Russia, drafted based on initiatives by the late Senator Graham.
