European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a joint statement following a bilateral meeting at the European Political Community summit in Armenia. The leaders discussed London’s plan to participate in a EUR 90 billion (GBP 78 billion) EU loan for Ukraine. They agreed that this participation would represent a significant step forward in EU-UK relations within the defense industry sector.

Both leaders emphasized their unwavering support for the Ukrainian people and praised their resilience and courage. The statement also addressed shared commitments to improving EU-UK relations to benefit consumers, businesses, and collective European security.

Additionally, Von der Leyen and Starmer announced an agreement to begin negotiations regarding the United Kingdom’s participation in the European Innovation Council Fund, including the Scaleup Europe Fund. This initiative aims to support promising high-tech companies and retain top innovators within Europe. The leaders expressed their anticipation for the upcoming EU-UK summit and highlighted the importance of achieving ambitious goals for the benefit of both parties.
