Petition to honor janitor killed during Holosiivsky district shooting gathers necessary votes – official

A petition on the Kyiv City Council website calling to honor the memory of janitor Oleksandr Perha, who died during a shooting in the capital’s Holosiivsky district, has gathered the 6,000 votes required for consideration.

The petition was submitted on April 23 and reached the necessary threshold by April 27. The text of the petition asks the Kyiv City Council and the Kyiv City State Administration to officially honor Perha, who shielded a child with his body during an attack on Demiivska Street, saving the child at the cost of his own life. The author of the petition requests the installation of a memorial sculpture or plaque at the site of the tragedy, the posthumous awarding of a city distinction to Perha, and an official public commemoration of his sacrifice at the city level.

A shooting occurred in the Holosiivsky district of Kyiv on April 18, resulting in the deaths of seven people. Police conducted a special operation to detain the attacker, during which he was neutralized. Media reports indicated that surveillance cameras captured the attacker returning to an entrance where a wounded child sat near his father. As the shooter opened fire toward the boy, the janitor ran to him. Doctors recorded bullet wounds on the man, and he died in the hospital a day later.
