Language law in education to foster cooperation with Hungary – official

The adoption of a law by the Verkhovna Rada regarding the use of language in the educational process will assist in establishing cooperation with Hungary, stated Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka.

"To my knowledge, this bill covers a number of those issues that the previous government of Hungary identified as critically important for the protection of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. Given the recent statements of the future Prime Minister of Hungary, and since we will have a dialogue regarding national minorities, this bill would certainly be helpful in establishing this work," Kachka said.

He emphasized that the bill was developed to implement the action plan for the protection of the rights of persons belonging to national minorities and is part of Ukraine’s obligations under the first cluster of the negotiation process for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. He expressed hope that the parliament would adopt the bill as soon as possible.

As reported, the bill (No. 13072) on amendments to certain laws regarding the use of language in the educational process was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on March 11, 2025. Specifically, the bill formalizes the use of the state language alongside the language of the respective national minority in educational institutions containing classes or groups teaching in the languages of national minorities that are official languages of the European Union.
