Magyar wants help for Hungarian minority in Ukraine before supporting Kyiv EU bid

Future Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar insists on expanding the rights of the Hungarian community in Ukraine before approving the start of official negotiations for Kyiv entry into the European Union, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

This issue was reportedly raised the day before during a meeting between Magyar and European Council President António Costa in Brussels. According to sources, Magyar set conditions that largely mirror the list of 11 demands presented to Kyiv in 2024 by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and access to education in the Hungarian language.

Bloomberg notes that earlier this week, Magyar expressed a desire to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in June to discuss the matter. Magyar also met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday.

"A very good exchange with @magyarpeterMP in Brussels today. We discussed the steps necessary to unlock EU funds earmarked for Hungary, that are frozen due to corruption and rule of law concerns," von der Leyen said on X.
