Lyceum in Ukrainian city of Kovel resumes work after EUR 982,000-worth upgrade under EIB project
Lyceum No. 12 in Kovel (Volyn region) has resumed work following a comprehensive modernization costing EUR 982,000 under the Public Buildings Energy Efficiency project, the European Investment Bank (EIB) said.
The lyceum’s modernization became the first completed facility under this project, which is supported by a European Union (EU) guarantee as part of the Ukraine Facility.
"The EIB supports projects that bring tangible improvements to communities. The modernization of this school in Kovel shows how investments in energy efficiency can improve daily life, reduce costs, and strengthen resilience at the local level," EIB Vice President Karl Nehammer said.
According to the report, following the modernization, learning conditions have been improved for more than 1,200 students and staff at the lyceum, while the building itself is expected to reduce energy consumption and heating costs.
The lyceum building, constructed more than 30 years ago, was completely renovated: the facade and roof were insulated, windows and doors were replaced, heating systems and engineering networks were modernized, and accessibility and safety were improved, specifically through the installation of ramps and landscaping of the surrounding area.
The Public Buildings Energy Efficiency Program in Ukraine provides for the modernization of more than 140 facilities, including schools, hospitals, cultural centers, and other public buildings in more than 70 communities across the country.
In Kovel, the program also plans to renovate six more public buildings, including educational, medical, and administrative facilities.
As reported, the program is supplemented by grants and technical assistance from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P), the EU Neighborhood Investment Platform (NIP), the EU’s Covenant of Mayors – Eastern Partnership, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and a European consortium of consultants led by Denmark’s NTU International.
