Capacity of Ukrainian HPP in Ukraine recently increased 300-fold -Ukrenergo head
In Ukraine, 600 MW of energy storage units are currently connected to the grid, while in 2024 there were only 2 MW, said Vitaliy Zaychenko, Chairman of the Board of NPC Ukrenergo.
"In 2023, we had no UHE at all, in 2024, only 2 MW, and now it's 600 MW. We're talking about growth not just several-fold, but 300-fold," Zaychenko said during the Energy Storage Day 2026 event, organized by the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association in Kyiv on Monday, according to an Energoreforma correspondent from the scene.
"As of today, technical specifications have been issued for 1.4 GW of UHE," the head of Ukrenergo clarified.
According to him, solar energy is the driver of the development of the UHE.
"It's already clear that solar power plants can't function effectively without PrJSC Ukrhydroenergo (UHE), as they generate a large surplus during daylight hours. UHE helps shift this electricity to times of increased demand," explained the head of Ukrenergo's board.
In a comment to an online portal on the sidelines of the event, Zaychenko noted that part of the UHE is connected to the Ukrenergo grid, while the rest is connected to the grids of distribution system operators.
"The simplified system is now connected, and the UHE is connected to the regional power company networks are not required to transmit theoretical data, so we see production and consumption as it happens, but not in real time," Zaychenko noted.
He also noted that Ukrenergo's competitions for the provision of ancillary services contributed to the rapid development of Ukrenergo, and Ukrenergo was among the winners, receiving guarantees for payment for such services from the system operator.
According to Andriy Gerus, head of the Verkhovna Rada Energy Committee, the significant growth in UHE is due to the reduction in equipment prices on global markets, which has had an economic impact on the projects.
At the same time, he noted that their development was also facilitated by legislation that "allows transparent businesses to plan, invest, and implement projects."
