Man attacks police with axe during traffic stop in Zaporizhia

A man attacked patrol police officers in Zaporizhia who were detaining a driver suspected of involvement in a traffic accident, the Zaporizhia Region Patrol Police said on Telegram.

Patrol officers stopped a Nissan Leaf showing signs of involvement in a traffic accident. During the interaction the driver suddenly drove away. Officers established his probable address, where they found the vehicle. Upon seeing the police vehicle, the driver began reversing, drove into a ditch, then abandoned the car and attempted to flee. He was detained using physical force and handcuffs.

"During the detention, an unknown man ran up to the officers with an axe. The man behaved aggressively, threatened the patrol officers, threw stones and used a tear gas canister. He was subsequently also detained," the statement said.

Both men were examined by medics and hospitalized. One of the police officers also required medical assistance.

The driver was cited for traffic violations. It was also established that he is wanted under a special wanted persons search, and was handed over to the military law enforcement service.

The second man was detained under Article 208 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Investigators opened criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional infliction of bodily harm on a law enforcement officer in connection with the performance of official duties).
