Negotiation clusters to officially open under new Hungarian government, all to be open by Christmas - EU Commissioner Kos
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos believes that negotiation clusters for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union will officially begin to open under a new government in Hungary, with all six expected to be open before Christmas.
"I hope that we can start very soon, even under the Cyprus presidency. This will depend on the member states or the Council. So I hope they hear me now when I say that I want to see something more in the first half of the year, but I also count on the Irish presidency in the second half of the year, where all clusters should be officially opened before we go to celebrate Christmas," Kos said during a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday.
The European Commissioner expects the official opening process to begin under a new Hungarian government, following previous blocks by incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban. "Under the current Hungarian government, the 90 billion loan was extended. With the new government, we will continue the accession process. We hope for this – we have already heard some positive news from the future Prime Minister of Hungary. So it will take a few weeks before we have a new government. But I am sure that very soon we will be able to officially open one cluster, and then all the others," she said.
