A Russia drone attack on the confinement of the Chornobyl NPP’s power unit 4 in 2025 was likely intentional, as evidenced by expert examinations establishing the circumstances of the drone hit, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said in an interview with Reuters.

The investigation conducted by Ukrainian prosecutors showed that the Russia attack was likely intentional, Reuters reported, citing Kravchenko.

These conclusions are based on an analysis of the angle at which the drone hit the arch of the shelter’s outer shell. Kravchenko noted that strike drones with explosives usually dive toward their target and accelerate until the moment of impact.

Russia military most likely used Chornobyl as a drone attack route to bypass Ukrainian air defense, the article said, citing Kravchenko.

In total, Russia has repeatedly launched drones and missiles along a trajectory near the Chornobyl NPP and Khmelnytsky NPP, the prosecutor general said. In particular, the flight of 35 Kinzhal missiles was recorded within a radius of about 20 km from these stations.

Such launches cannot be explained by any military expediency. Obviously, flights over nuclear facilities are carried out exclusively for intimidation and terror, the publication quoted the Ukrainian prosecutor general as saying.

The Prosecutor General’s Office reminded Interfax-Ukraine that a Shahed-type drone hit the New Safe Confinement (NSC) arch of the Chornobyl NPP’s power unit 4 on February 14, 2025.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the hit damaged the outer skin of the arch and equipment in the crane maintenance garage. The fire was localized, there were no casualties, and no increase in radiation levels was recorded.

Expert results conducted within the criminal proceedings established the circumstances of the drone hit, the Prosecutor General’s Office explained. These indicators suggest the drone flight followed a pre-determined route and the hit on the shelter’s outer shell likely occurred at a pre-programmed aiming point, meaning it was intentional.
