Ukraine and Portugal to expand cooperation in irrigation and processing projects

Ukraine and Portugal plan to implement joint agricultural projects in the areas of irrigation, processing, and access to third-country markets, particularly in Africa.

The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy announced strengthened cooperation following the visit of the committee’s head, Oleksandr Haidu, to Portugal.

According to the report, during a meeting with Portuguese Minister of Agriculture and the Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, the parties discussed steps to expand the presence of Ukrainian agricultural products in EU markets. Particular attention was paid to restoring supply chains and implementing technologies to create added value in the Ukrainian agricultural sector.

The dialogue also focused on adapting Ukrainian legislation to EU requirements. According to Haidu, Portugal’s experience is critical for reforming farmer support mechanisms and updating industry standards.

"Portugal has significant experience adapting to European Union policies, and this is important for us in the process of implementing EU regulations, farmer support mechanisms, and updating standards and requirements in Ukraine," Haidu noted.

Following the talks, the parties agreed to attract Portuguese investment and technology exchange to stabilize the Ukrainian agricultural sector under martial law.
