People's Deputy of Ukraine and leader of the European Solidarity party Petro Poroshenko spoke highly of the service and actions of the head of the Patrol Police Department, Yevheniy Zhukov, who submitted his resignation following the April 18 terror attack in Kyiv, expressing conviction that all Ukrainian security officials should follow his example.

"Yevhen Zhukov took responsibility upon himself. This is more than the act of an officer—it is the act of an Officer with a capital O. This is the act of 'Marshal.' All security officials should take an example from him, but they do not," Poroshenko wrote on Facebook on Monday.

He noted that he has known Zhukov since 2014, when the latter became commander of a reconnaissance company of the 79th Brigade, and emphasized that he participated in the defense of Donetsk Airport and, in 2022, the Ukrainian capital.

"For 11 years, Yevhen Zhukov built the patrol police and brought army honor to it. Thank you for your service, Marshal. Ukraine knows and remembers you. There is still much work ahead for our state—and I am certain you know where to move next," Poroshenko wrote.

As reported, Zhukov stated on Sunday that he submitted his resignation following the April 18 terror attack. "The police acted unprofessionally and unworthily," he said, adding that his subordinates "failed to orient themselves properly and left civilians in danger."

On April 18, a shooting occurred in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, resulting in 6 deaths. Police conducted a special operation to detain the attacker, during which he was liquidated.

According to law enforcement, the shooting was carried out by a 58-year-old native of Moscow and citizen of Ukraine, who previously lived in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, and later in the capital's Holosiivskyi district. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, he used registered weapons.

Meanwhile, the actions of patrol police officers during the terror attack in Kyiv are under investigation; the officers have been suspended from duty pending the inquiry. Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko reported that criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding the improper performance of official duties by police officers during the terrorist act in Kyiv on April 18, 2026. The legal qualification of the offense is part 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (official negligence resulting in grave consequences).
