Dutch PM says possible options include military mission to protect Strait of Hormuz

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten took part in a videoconference with leaders of 50 countries on ensuring the security of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

"Free passage through the Strait of Hormuz cannot and must not be obstructed in any way. The consequences of the current situation are being felt around the world, including here in the Netherlands. This afternoon, I spoke with leaders of 50 countries during a videoconference to discuss how we can jointly help resolve this issue," he said on X.

According to him, the starting point should be pressure on Iran to comply with the principle of free passage, and he also raised the possibility of a military mission.

"We must begin by pressuring Iran to comply with the principle of free passage. In addition, among the possible options is a military mission to protect the Strait of Hormuz, to begin immediately after the cessation of hostilities. The Netherlands is studying this issue, and together with allies we are working on the relevant military planning," Jetten said.

According to him, conference participants are working through various possible scenarios.

"Even after the declared ceasefire, many uncertainties remain, and events are developing rapidly. That is why we are working through different scenarios. One thing is clear: shipping must always be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without obstruction," the prime minister said.
