Zelenskyy joins international summit on Strait of Hormuz security

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his participation in an international video conference focused on restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

"Today I will also participate in a meeting on Hormuz. Many leaders are gathering to coordinate and guarantee security in the Strait of Hormuz. Now the world knows exactly where this strait is and why it is so important. Almost the same things are being said about this strait as we said about the Black Sea in 2022-2023, when Russia tried to block us. Ukraine solved that task," Zelenskyy said in an address on Friday.

The President emphasized that maritime security is a global value rather than an isolated problem. "Security must be protected jointly. We hope that the conclusions of our partners regarding all current challenges will be strong," the head of state noted.

The international summit, co-hosted in Paris by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, brings together leaders from approximately 40 countries. The initiative aims to establish a multinational, strictly defensive mission to secure the waterway following recent regional conflicts and a fragile ceasefire. The mission is expected to focus on intelligence, mine-clearing, and vessel protection to ensure the flow of global energy and trade.

Zelenskyy’s participation underscores Ukraine’s growing role in international maritime security discussions, drawing on its experience in successfully breaking Russia’s naval blockade to restore grain exports through the Black Sea.
