Magyar announces intent to meet Zelenskyy and normalize relations with Ukraine
Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party that won the elections in Hungary, announced his intention to hold a meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and emphasized that the new government will strive to establish allied and friendly relations with neighboring states, including Ukraine, Telex reports.
"We will definitely meet, if nowhere else, then in the European Council," Magyar said, commenting on a possible meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to him, Hungary is "surrounded by the Hungarian people," so it is in the country’s interest to maintain good relations with neighboring states.
Magyar also stated that disputes with Ukraine are used by the Fidesz party, the party of current Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, for domestic political interests, and he would not make this a daily political topic.
"Everyone in Hungary knows that Ukraine is the victim in this war," the report says.
Separately, he emphasized that a prerequisite for settling relations with Ukraine must be resolving the issue of the rights of the Hungarian minority living in Ukraine. According to him, the Ukrainian leadership understands this, as there was a desire on both sides to resolve this issue, but it has not yet been possible.
As reported earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiha, during the opening of an updated exposition of defense solutions on the occasion of the Day of the Defense-Industrial Complex Worker of Ukraine on Monday, told journalists that signals were passed to the Hungarian side regarding possible contacts at the level of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungarian Tisza party leader Peter Magyar.
