French President Emmanuel Macron has invited US President Donald Trump to dinner at the Palace of Versailles the day after the G7 summit, which will take place in mid-June, Reuters reports.

Currently, according to sources, it remains unknown whether Trump will attend either event.

"France is the host of this year’s G7 summit, which will be held June 15-17 in the resort town of Evian-les-Bains on the lake shore at the foot of the French Alps. Macron has already changed the summit dates to accommodate a mixed martial arts tournament that Trump is organizing at the White House on June 14, his 80th birthday," the report says.

It is noted that Trump’s relations with many members of the G7 are becoming increasingly strained due to his conflict with Iran and other issues, including his overtly sharp comments regarding British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s proposal for military support expressed in early March. He has also repeatedly criticized NATO, which includes all G7 members except Japan, for its response to this conflict.

Sources noted that it is not yet clear whether Trump will appear in Evian-les-Bains, let alone Versailles, where, according to them, none of the other G7 leaders have been invited.

According to two sources, Macron invited Trump to a gala event at Versailles intended to highlight the shared history of the two countries ahead of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States on July 4.

A high-ranking White House official confirmed the invitation, saying: "Macron really wants Trump to go, he’s begging him to go." But the official added that Trump has not even decided yet whether he will participate in the G7 summit.

Macron’s office declined to comment on the invitation to Versailles.

A French official familiar with the plans, which are still in the early stages, said that Macron may host Trump for a bilateral visit as part of the G7 summit, as he would any other invited leader.

"The format of this reception has not yet been determined. The visit is still to be confirmed," the official said.
