Since start of war, 239 medics and patients killed in 2,900 attacks on Ukraine's healthcare system – WHO
Since the start of the full-scale war, 239 medical workers and patients have been killed and 955 injured as a result of 2,900 attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare system, Dr. Jarno Habicht, Head of the WHO Office in Ukraine, said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
According to him, a 20% increase in the number of attacks on the healthcare system was recorded in 2025 compared to the previous year.
He reported that in 2025, the WHO representative team in Ukraine also came under fire while delivering trauma kits and over-the-counter medicines in Kherson region as part of an inter-agency UN humanitarian convoy together with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Food Programme.
"As humanitarian workers, regardless of international law, we face the same security risks when delivering vital supplies as everyone else," he said.
Habicht also noted that the WHO continues to deliver aid to hard-to-reach areas of the country, such as Sviatohirsk (Donetsk region), Kupiansk (Kharkiv region), and many other lesser-known communities along the line of contact.
In total, since 2022, the WHO has delivered more than 4,900 metric tons of equipment and other medical supplies to Ukraine. In 2025, it delivered 319 metric tons of medical supplies to 954 healthcare facilities, participating in 41 inter-agency UN convoys and making 40 direct deliveries.
"For frontline areas, we provide kits of over-the-counter medicines, drugs for treating chronic diseases at the primary care level, emergency medical kits for children and communities, as well as trauma and surgery kits for hospitals," Habicht added.
