Verkhovna Rada expresses condolences over death of Patriarch Philaret
Leadership of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, people’s deputies, and staff of the Verkhovna Rada Office express condolences over the death of Honorary Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine Philaret, the parliament’s press service reports.
"He did much to preserve church life during years of Soviet persecution of the Church, during the time of Ukraine’s spiritual rebirth, and especially during years of struggle for the establishment of church autocephaly. For his activities, he was awarded numerous church and secular honors. In January 2019, he received the highest state award – the title of Hero of Ukraine," the message on the Telegram channel emphasizes.
As reported, Patriarch Philaret died on Friday, March 20, in his 98th year of life from complications of chronic illnesses.
