USA considering large-scale deployment of ground troops as war with Iran enters new phase – media
US President Donald Trump’s administration is considering the deployment of thousands of troops to reinforce operations in the Middle East, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the situation, including unnamed US officials.
"The deployment of troops could provide Trump with additional options as he weighs expanding US operations, with the war against Iran now in its third week. According to sources, these options include ensuring safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz—a mission primarily carried out by air and naval forces. However, as noted by four sources, including two US officials, securing the strait could also involve deploying US troops to the Iranian coastline," Reuters said.
"The Trump administration has also discussed options for sending ground forces to Iran’s Kharg Island, the hub for 90% of Iranian oil exports, according to three people familiar with the matter and three US officials. One official noted that such an operation would be highly risky. Iran has the capability to strike the island with missiles and drones," according to the Reuters report, which granted anonymity to the sources "to discuss military planning."
