Lancet downed in central Kyiv likely equipped with AI — Media
The drone that crashed today near the Independence Monument (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) in Kyiv has been identified as a new type of Lancet loitering munition, posing a significant technological threat, Defense Express reported on Monday.
According to preliminary information obtained by Defense Express from its own sources, the wreckage confirms the drone is a Lancet, evidenced by its characteristic X-shaped tail fin with a pusher propeller and wing markings bearing an RF index. While analysis is ongoing, experts suggest it is highly probable that this kamikaze drone utilized artificial intelligence for swarm deployment, autonomous navigation, and target acquisition without a direct link to an operator. This theory is supported by unusual markings of colored circles similar to those seen on Russian V2U autonomous drones, which are believed to help units maintain formation while moving in a pack.
The experts note that today’s morning strike on Kyiv was a group attack, and they do not rule out the use of mesh-modems or mobile communication for coordination. While the Lancet typically has a cited communication range of 50 km, the Russian military has claimed regular flights at 90 km and records of up to 136 km. While Kyiv is over 200 km from the Russian border, it is only 90 km from the border with Belarus, putting the capital within this extended reach.
The authors conclude that the strike on central Kyiv with a drone carrying a warhead of up to 3 kg serves as a demonstration of new Russian capabilities. Furthermore, they emphasize that the use of such autonomous technology by Russia removes any remaining reservations regarding the autonomization of Ukraine’s own long-range drone systems.
