Indictment sent to court for hitman suspected in Parubiy killing, faces life in prison — SBU

Ukraine’s Security Service has completed its pretrial investigation and sent an indictment to court for a hitman suspected of killing Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Parubiy.

"The perpetrator faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property," the SBU press service said on its Telegram channel.

Based on investigative actions, new crimes by the suspect were documented, including his calls to overthrow the constitutional order and eliminate representatives of Ukraine’s state authorities. During the investigation, authorities also found a sawed-off hunting rifle that the perpetrator had hidden in a cache at Lychakiv Cemetery for possible use in subversive activities.

Law enforcement detained the hitman in September 2025 in Khmelnytsky region, from where he planned to illegally leave the country.

"According to the investigation, the accused is a 53-year-old Lviv resident who was recruited by Russian intelligence services in 2024 when he was searching Telegram channels for information about his son, who had gone missing in the combat zone in Donetsk region. After recruitment, the suspect carried out enemy tasks: tracking and leaking to the Russians the locations of Defense Forces, as well as attempting to collect data on the directions of railway fuel convoys. Later, the Russians proposed he carry out a ‘more complex’ task — to kill one of the state officials. Thus, from ideological motives, the killer chose as his victim Ukrainian lawmaker and former Verkhovna Rada chairman Andriy Parubiy," the SBU said.

After the killing, the suspect tried to destroy evidence and flee abroad.

It was also established that the man justified Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, denied Russian war crimes and glorified the Russian army.

Based on the collected evidence, the suspect is charged under Article 111, Part 2 (treason committed under martial law), Article 109, Part 3 (public calls for violent change and overthrow of the constitutional order using mass media), Article 27, Part 2, Article 28, Part 2, Article 112 (attempt on the life of a statesman committed in connection with his state and public activities by prior conspiracy of a group of persons), Article 27, Part 2, Article 28, Part 2, Article 263, Part 1 (carrying, storing and acquiring firearms and ammunition without legally required permission, committed by prior conspiracy of a group of persons) and Article 436-2, Parts 1, 3 (glorification of persons who carried out Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, justification of, recognition as lawful, denial of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine) of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.

The investigation was conducted by SBU officers in Lviv region under procedural supervision of the regional prosecutor’s office.

As reported, on August 30, 2025, the suspect fired eight shots at the victim. The injuries were fatal - the MP died at the scene. After that, the attacker hid the firearm, planning to use it again. In September, law enforcement officers discovered the hiding place, and the results of the examinations confirmed the man’s involvement in the crime.
