President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on Tuesday, March 10, announced the first recipients of the European Order of Merit.

"These Europeans embody the remarkable diversity of excellence and commitment that drives Europe forward and strengthens its standing across the world. Their extraordinary achievements remind us that people from every walk of life can build Europe on a daily basis, shape our Union, and uphold our shared values," Metsola said on X.

The order, established in 2025, has three categories: Distinguished Members, Honoured Members and Members.

Among the Distinguished Members, Metsola said, are Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, former Polish President Lech Wałęsa, and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

In addition to the president, another Ukrainian is among the laureates: human rights defender Oleksandra Matviichuk will receive the order at the member level.

"The ceremony of conferral will take place at the European Parliament in Strasbourg in May," Metsola added.
