EU to keep rules on military-age Ukrainian men under temporary protection until March 2027 – spokesperson

Temporary protection in the European Union is currently granted to Ukrainians regardless of gender and age, and this procedure has now been extended until March 2027, European Commission Spokesperson Markus Lammert said, commenting on the discussion in member states on providing protection to Ukrainian men of military age.

"As far as I remember the rules [for granting temporary protection], they do not make any distinction between women, children and men of military age," Lammert said at a briefing in Brussels on Friday.

When asked whether the EU should accept Ukrainian men of military age during the war in Ukraine and whether there is indeed a discussion at the European level about their temporary protection in view of the raising of the relevant issue by the Luxembourg government and the Ukrainian authorities, the European Commission spokesperson replied: "I am not aware of the debate in Luxembourg. What I can say is temporary protection is something that we have decided at EU level, at Member State level until 27 [2027], so until next year, March next year. The current rules are in force, and that is all I can say at the moment."
