Poroshenko discusses pressure on Russia and bipartisan support for Ukraine with American diplomats
People's Deputy of Ukraine and leader of the European Solidarity party Petro Poroshenko met with John Herbst, Director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center and former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, William Taylor, also a former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, and Daniel Fried, former State Department Sanctions Policy Coordinator. The meeting focused on the unity of Europe and the United States, pressure on Russia, and U.S. support for Ukraine.
"We discussed the experience of previous years and, on this basis, considered the most effective approaches for the current stage of the confrontation with Russia. I am glad that our common position is clear: diplomacy without force and without instruments of pressure is unable to ensure the desired result. That is why the diplomatic track must be accompanied by the strengthening of Ukraine's defense capabilities, primarily through the provision of long-range weapons, the introduction of creative and more powerful sanctions against Russia, and real security guarantees," Poroshenko wrote on Facebook following the meeting.
According to him, the parties paid special attention to the importance of transatlantic unity between the U.S. and Europe and the necessity of bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States.
"We also discussed the internal situation in Ukraine, including the state of democracy, the rule of law, and the challenges of corruption and the anti-corruption struggle. Strengthening the internal political unity of the state based on the principles of inclusiveness, interaction, and coordination is critically important," Poroshenko added.
