Ex-Odesa Mayor Trukhanov says he has received 'legally confirmed' proof he does not hold Russian citizenship
Former Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov claims that his lawyers have obtained "legally confirmed" documents proving that he does not hold Russian citizenship.
He noted that he had long tried to obtain the relevant documents from Ukrainian state authorities, but unsuccessfully. Therefore, he pursued "another route."
"We found another way. My lawyers approached states that maintain diplomatic relations with Russia to make official requests, since Ukraine does not have such relations. On December 30, 2025, I received a response: I do not hold citizenship of the Russian Federation," Trukhanov wrote on Telegram.
Trukhanov stated that he has "all official proof" in hand. "These are not photos from the internet, not photoshopped fakes, but legally confirmed documents proving that I do not hold Russian citizenship," he emphasized.
The former mayor is appealing to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, asking him to instruct the relevant authorities to verify these documents.
"I ask you as the Guarantor of the Constitution: instruct the verification of these official documents. And make the only possible fair decision. I am not asking for privileges. I insist on legality. I was and remain a citizen of Ukraine. And that is unchanged," the former mayor wrote.
As reported, on October 14 the Commission on Citizenship under the President of Ukraine decided to terminate the Ukrainian citizenship of Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov, who, as it turned out, is a citizen of the Russian Federation and holds a valid foreign passport of the aggressor state. The decision was based, in particular, on evidence provided by the Security Service of Ukraine and was enacted by presidential decree.
