European Commission aims to finalize EUR 90 bln loan for Ukraine next week
The European Union must significantly step up its support for Ukraine, and the European Commission expects to complete the legal procedure for a EUR 90 billion loan to Kyiv next week, EU Commissioner for Economy Valdis Dombrovskis announced.
" I presented an update on our EUR 90 billion Ukraine Support Loan and also on ERA loans payments [Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration, an initiative of the G7 and EU], as well as on the upcoming IMF Board meeting to approve the new programme for Ukraine," the commissioner said at a press conference in Brussels on Tuesday following the EU Council meeting on economic and financial affairs.
According to him, "time is of the essence." Following the positive vote in the European Parliament and with the backing of Cyprus's presidency of the EU Council, the Commission aims "to conclude the legislative process next week."
"In parallel, we are engaging with the Ukrainian authorities to facilitate a swift disbursement once the legislative process has concluded, preparing its Financial Strategy and the conditions for this funding," Dombrovskis explained.
On February 11, members of the European Parliament voted during a plenary session in Strasbourg to approve the EUR 90 billion loan for Ukraine for 2026–2027, based on borrowing from capital markets backed by the EU budget. Background materials for the session noted that on October 23, 2025, 26 member states instructed the Commission to present a proposal for financial support to Ukraine as soon as possible.
The EU Council must now adopt the final official regulation authorizing the loan.
