Kyiv City Council has accepted the early termination of office of Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky on the basis of his resignation letter.
A total of 110 members of the council voted for this decision at a meeting on Thursday.
According to the council's decision, the city council secretary, Halyna Hereha, will be temporarily acting as the mayor of the capital city. The city council instructed Hereha to apply to the Verkhovna Rada asking it to call the early elections of Kyiv mayor.
In addition, the UDAR (Blow) faction and the BYT-Batkivschyna faction in the city council suggested requesting the Prosecutor General's Office conduct a probe into Chernovetsky's activities in 2006-2012. However, the council did not support this proposal.
