The creation of a national network of family doctors and improvements in the medical emergency services will be key features of the reform of Ukraine's healthcare system, Health Minister Vasyl Kniazevych has said.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday in Kyiv, Kniazevych said the Cabinet of Ministers had ordered inventory of the medical sector as a part of the reform of the healthcare system.

He said his ministry is checking the number of medical institutions in the country, their equipment, staff numbers and the level of staff training.

Systemic reform can only be carried out after the inventory is complete, Kniazevych said.

"A number of measures for reforming the system have been worked out. Direct reform has not yet started - we shall consider the proposals at a government meeting," he said.

Kniazevych said the reform of the healthcare system primarily concerned the creation of a national network of family doctors providing free medical services.
